Beyond the individual: Liz Day’s article published by the BPS
Why do people thrive in some environments and struggle in others? What changes when we look beyond the individual and consider the conditions around them?

These questions are at the heart of an article by Collectively Diverse CIC Founder Liz Day, published by the British Psychological Society.
Psychological safety: Beyond the individual explores how environments shape behaviour, belonging and wellbeing across workplaces, education, healthcare, communities and sport.
Liz considers why encouraging confidence or resilience needs to sit alongside examining the expectations, communication and culture people encounter. Through the lens of neurodiversity, she also explores why practical adjustments need a culture where people feel safe to ask for support and contribute openly.
Psychological safety makes room for questions, mistakes, challenge and accountability. It helps create the conditions for learning, collaboration and growth.
This perspective runs through our work at Collectively Diverse, including our Champions for Difference programme, neuroinclusion training and consultancy.
As Liz asks in the article:
“What conditions would allow this person, and those around them, to thrive?”
